With children as young as 4 using the Internet, parents need to constantly monitor their kids’ online activities. But before they can properly do that they need to know exactly what they are up against in regards to internet dangers.

The following are the top reasons why parents should make sure their children are being safe online. Below are also a couple resources parents can use to get help.

The dangers

1. Internet predators

The Internet opens the door for young people to interact with virtual strangers — even people that in real life they’d cross the street to avoid. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children about 1 in 7 kids have been sexually solicited online.

2. Cyber bullying

Bullying, which was once an act limited to playgrounds or school lunch rooms, is now taking place through e-mail, Web sites, instant messaging, chat rooms, blogs and text messages, said Renee Martin, director of education and outreach for the state Attorney General’s office.

3. Inappropriate content

The Internet provides access to social networking websites, adult chat rooms, pornographic websites, and websites that are violent in nature.

“Unless you have parental controls set up, your child can easily access any type of site with a standard Internet search,” said Jeremy Dixon, chair of Central Penn College’s Information Technology Program.

4. Invasion of privacy

Many individuals, children especially, do not realize that the information they post online isn’t always private. Making personal information public can also make it accessible to a sexual predator, lead to identity theft or a damaged reputation.
