standard pcTattletale For Android Stopped Recording Screen

If you ended up on this page it is likely that pcTattletale has stopped recording the screen on the target device you installed it on.  There are a few reasons this can happen.  The good news is they are easily fixed.

Just follow the steps in this article to configure the target phone to leave pcTattletale alone so it can record their activity.  Be sure to read the BOTTOM OF THIS POST so you can reinstall pcTattletale to get it working again.

Google Play Protect App Scanning

Some phones have Google play app scanning.  You need to turn it off or it will delete pcTattletale after a few hours.  Does your phone have it?  Just open up the phone settings and type “play protect”.  If it shows up follow the screen shots below.  Notice in the screen shots below pcTattletale was found pretty quickly and wants to be removed.  If this already happened you will need to just install pcTattletale again.

Disable app scanning so it leaves pcTattletale alone:

If pcTattletale was disabled by Google Play protect you will need to reinstall the app after you have turned off this feature.

Android 11 GPS Tracking Stops Working!

Android 11 is tricky when it comes to GPS tracking.  When you set up pcTattletale it is easy to overlook setting the app to record GPS all the time.  Try setting up pcTattletale again.  When you get the GPS tracking section notice how they hide the “all the time” setting with Android 11:

Are They Off Wifi?

pcTattletale can use a lot of data to send up all those screen shots to make the videos you watch.  For this reason we do not want it burning through all of their data plan unless you tell us it is OK.  By default pcTattletale will hold the videos on their phone until they are back in Wifi range.  Then it will send them up for you to view.

Sometimes Android thinks it is not on a Wifi connection when it really is.  Then pcTattletale holds the video recordings and you can not view them.  To fix this problem just turn the cell phone icon next to the phone’s name from gray to blue:

After you do this, simply unlock the phone for pcTattletale to see your new changes. Then tap the screen a few times to trigger some new screen shots.  When it sees this change pcTattletale will send you the screen shots no matter what. Even if they are using their cell phone signal and not Wifi.  If this turned out to be your problem you DO NOT need to remove and install the app again.

TIP:  For troubleshooting just turn this feature on for a day to make sure this is not why you can not view the videos on the pcTattletale site.  You can easily change it back later.

Did They See a Strange Icon or POP-UP Warning?

One common problem is that if you have a newer phone (Android 7 & 8) there can be a “Cast” icon that shows on the top of their phone.  It is Android’s way of letting them know they are sharing their screen (with pcTattletale).  They could see this icon and decide to take away the screen sharing for pcTattletale.  In this case you would see pcTattletale stopped recording.

This is what the cast icon looks like:

If you do not do this step they can see pcTattletale is running and easily take away our screen reading permissions.  Then you will notice pcTattletale stops recording their activities.

If you think this was your problem you will need to remove and install pcTattletale again since Android has disabled it. Consider using an alternate download name if you think they found it.

Remove Android’s “Drawing Over Apps” Notifications

With Android version 7 & 8 (oreo) they give nasty notifications about pcTattletale recording your screen.  If the person you are watching sees these they can easily disable pcTattletale.  You will not get any recordings.  Let’s get those notifications removed.

Click the image or link below to turn off this notification. Here is what the notification looks like.  You can see it if you swipe down from the top of the screen:
