Teen Pregnancy Rates Affected by Television

Compelling new research does more than suggest that pregnancy rates are actually higher among teams to watch television programming that contain sexual dialogue and behavior compared with those who watch more family oriented programming.

This new study is the first to link viewing habits with teen pregnancy, said lead author Anita Chandra, a Rand Corp. behavioral scientists.

Evidence shows that teens who watched the shows that demonstrated the most promiscuous behavior were twice as likely to become pregnant over the next three years as opposed to those who watched fewer such programs.

The study was released Monday in the November issue of pediatrics magazine.  It involved 2,300, 12 to 17 year old girls and boys nationwide who were questioned by telephone about their TV viewing habits in the year 2001.

Among girls, 58 of those became pregnant during the follow-up survey, and among boys, 33 of those stated that they had accidentally or purposefully gotten a girl pregnant.

Television shows to be included in the survey included “Sex and the city,” “That 70s show” and “Friends.”

But the study did not address other team related issues such as self-esteem income and family values said Elizabeth Schroeder, executive director of answer, a Rutgers University-based teen sex education program.
